The Best Part of #iste12

The best part of ISTE this year won’t be the keynote. It won’t be the epic presentations. It won’t be the #EduAwesome Ed Tech Karaoke party. No. The best part will be the Social Butterfly Lounge.

The Social Butterfly Lounge is a place for educators to learn about social media. ISTE wants us to “help people gain social media literacy and connect with each other using various tools”. It’s going to be much more than that. I have a feeling this it’s going to be the best part of ISTE. Not only will it be a great place to introduce teachers to social media, it will also be a place to connect with other teachers that you already know through social media. So, if you’ve been tweeting, “Who’s going to #iste12?”, or “Add your name to my list so I can see you at #iste12”, than this is the place to be. Rather than wondering where all your tweeps are, just come to the Social Butterfly Lounge. We will be there.

I’ve noticed that the community of educators on Twitter is amazing, but there’s a problem–the same people are talking to each other about the same stuff. We’re stuck in a feedback loop. We’re talking to ourselves.

We know social media is great, we know it’s changing our classrooms, and yet we talk about it with each other and no one else.

This is our chance to branch out, to show other educators how transformative social media can be. And then we will get more educators excited about connecting with social media.

We need volunteers to help run this lounge. Sign up here on the Google Doc. We need to fill forty  time slots (30-minutes) on:

Sunday: 3:30-5 pm; 7-8 pm (during the Opening Reception)
Monday-Tuesday: 9 am-3 pm
Wednesdsay: 9 am-1:30 pm

Here are notes from my CUE Presentation in Palm Springs, Create an Online Video Library

There’s a problem: there are not enough hours in the day to teach. Some students need more time to review/study your material to become proficient.

There’s a solution: make an online video library. Students can download/watch videos whenever they need to. You make the video once, and hundreds of students can watch it hundreds of times. Here’s how to get started.

Workflow (CSI)

  1. Create content.
  2. Share content.
  3. Integrate content.

Context (Chris Anderson’s TED Talk)

  • 80 millions hours of YouTube consumed every day
  • 90% of the web’s data will be video in 4 years
  • Our brains are wired to receive video

Create: Apps for Recording

First, you need to record something. Most people think of only a video camera, but there are several easy (and quick) alternatives. You can create media using:

  • Video Camera
  • Record straight to YouTube
  • Voice memo app on iPhone (audio only) to SoundCloud
  • Jing/Screenr screen capture
  • QuickTime screen/video

Refine Video

The goal is to get content to your students. When you first begin creating content, focus on being quick. As time progresses, you can fine tune your video workflow. Eventually, you can have a polished video, complete with an intro and credits.

  • Instant/unedited
  • Quick edit/heads and tails
  • Well produced

Content is king. Quality is good, but content is more important, timeliness is more important, regularity is more important, and sustainability is more important.

Project Frequency

Think about how often you want to create videos for you students. As you begin, focus on a complicated project, or an important unit that needs extra review. Again, as time progresses, you can increase the frequency of your videos.

  • Review for big test
  • Weekly review/preview
  • Daily review

Examples

Sharing: Hosting Options

Once you record your content, you need to upload it. SchoolTube requires a teacher’s email address, but it is rarely blocked by districts.

Integrate into the Classroom

  • Online, outside of school hours
  • On-demand
  • Review on a school computer
  • Extension prompts (for advanced kids)
  • One-to-one using iPads
  • Rewatch without asking for help
