You always want to separate the layout of a site from its content. The content management system (CMS) of WordPress inherently does that for you. You can quickly change the theme of your site… the layout instantly changes, but the content (pages, posts, links, etc) remains.
WordPress widgets give you simple ways to customize content in your sidebar. Spend some time looking for widgets that meet your user’s needs.
