7. Bookmarklets
Bookmarklets are simple “one-click” tools which add functionality to the browser. When clicked, a bookmarklet performs some function, one of a wide variety such as a search query or data extraction. Usually the applet is a JavaScript program. Read more at Wikipedia.
Useful bookmarklets
- Readability (modify the layout of a current webpage to make it easier to read)
- BigHugeLabs View on Black (takes a photo from Flickr and displays it large with a black background)
- Download YouTube videos (save videos as an mp4)
- Google Translator (at the bottom of the page, 1-click bookmarklets to translate current page into chosen language)
- Share on Posterous (Posterous is a super-easy-to-post-to blogging platform)
- bit.ly sidebar (shortens link, post to social media sites, analytics)
- TBuzz (post link to Twitter, including bit.ly shortening)
- HootSuite (extend HootSuite’s (Twitter reader) functionality)
- Snipurl.com (Snip! bookmarklet is at bottom)
- Diigolet (bookmark to Diigo, add to groups, highlight text, add tags)
- Google Reader–Settings > Goodies > Bookmarks. (Subscribe to a site through Google Reader, read subscriptions from a group, etc)
